My sister-in-law, Mary Carpelan wrote and illustrated this ancient family story in a children's book called Coyote Fights the Sun (currently out of print) I'm using common names for places and please forgive some of the photos. In most animal fights the confrontation is short and sweet, so I don’t get carried away with long stretches of yipping and growling. But I call enough to establish that there’s a fight going on. If you use coyote howls and later add fights you could be sending a message of mates fighting over a breeding partner. February is when breeding.

Sun went to live in the sky and sent his rays to everyone on earth. Coyote lived in the eastern foothills. Coyote wanted to go visit Sun. He asked Prairie Flacon to tell him how to get to Sun. Prairie Falcon showed Coyote the Size: KB.

There was a third coyote there. It was because of this third coyote that the others had made their mad dash over to this area. I soon recognized the third coyote as a male sibling to the female, son to the father — a family member! I had not seen him in months. This is a coyote whom I had characterized as timid and careful.   My dad thinks our 80 LB Australian Shephard would fight a coyote if they ran in to each other. I think he would run away. He actually thinks the Aussie will protect his friend a 20 LB female mini pinscher from being harmed by a coyote. I disagree. Few years ago, a coyote got in to our gated yard and attacked & killed our 5 month old Aussie pup (his best friend) and he did .
